IN ADDITION

I made this stand out of an old bedside table. I designed the stand for my Canon digital still camera.
I bought wood, nuts and bolts at a local lumber store and fashioned a column with the basic hand tools I own (drill, hand saw, screwdriver, etc.).
I purchased the lights at an office supply store and adapted them so they would attach to the stand symmetrically, allowing for an even bath of light to be cast on the table surface.
These are shelf brackets that I bought at IKEA. They were cheap; I spent less than $20 for the two of them.

To mount the camera to the bracket, I brought my digital camera to a hardware store and found a nut that would thread into the camera's tripod mount. I then found a washer and wing-nut that would thread onto the nut.

To fasten the camera to the stand, I would thread the nut into the camera tripod mount, enough to catch. Then, I would tighten the wing-nut towards the back of the camera, so that camera presses tautly against the wooden bracket. The bracket will act like a base, similar to the base on a tripod.
