ie gallery | Drek Campbell + Sunny Sealeopard | Document of a Sidewalk

Tuesday, June 26, 2012 - 6:00pm - 9:00pm

Join the ie gallery for the closing celebration of June artists in residence, Sunny Sealeopard and Drek Campbell who’ve taken over the space and filled it with a layered formation of found and made materials.

Drek Campbell |Sediment
I view trash as an evolution of material form, rather than an object fixed in time. We mark objects with the story of our life right up to the moment we discard them. We crush beer cans when we’re excited, or wrinkle paper when we’re thinking about a friend we haven’t seen, the grocery list we wrote when we couldn’t afford rent. We try to think very little about what they become after we throw them away. In working with these discarded objects, I look at the value of entropy, not as meaningless decomposition into disorder, but as a component that builds an understanding of our future.

Sunny Sealeopard (Allison Karow)
Responding to Drek’s combine/formations and my own collected materials, I explode diagrams, compressing and decompressing layers into a deformed micro landscape. Repetition creates growth and change until a tiny society emerges. Reproduction and familial relations become important to define amongst these elements. Variants on modular forms are hand-made until they shift and converse with one another. These 3-D elements are re-documented in the language of drawing and the two exist together. Collecting and finding are part of understanding my connection to what is around me. Sometimes I am the bird and sometimes I am the nest.
