Emily Carr is committed to developing an institutional culture of sustainability and to fostering awareness of environmental change within the community.
Here are some of the sustainability activities at Emily Carr:
- Signed Talloires Declaration in 2006, which is a worldwide movement recognizing higher education’s institutional responsibility towards sustainable development.
- The Sustainable Practices Committee was formed in 2008. This committee developed strategic plans and initiatives that will be incorporated into the upcoming 2010-15 Strategic Plan.
- The Senate and Board of Governor's approved the University Sustainability Policy in November 2009 (PDF). This policy establishes sustainability as a priority in curriculum and all campus operations.
- Curriculum has always dealt with issues of critical interest to society. Increasingly courses in all Faculties address issues related to green design, sustainability and other environmental concerns.
- The Facilities Department ensured that campus operations move toward greater sustainability through such efforts as water and energy conservation, recycling and composting initiatives.
- The BC Government has set Carbon Neutrality 2010 goals for public institutions.
