Overview/Tours/Advising/National Portfolio Day
Emily Carr University of Art + Design is one of Canada’s premier post-secondary universities specializing in undergraduate and graduate art, design and media education. It is located on Granville Island in the centre of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In the 1970s Granville Island was converted from an industrial site with shipyards and metalworking shops into a colorful complex of studios, galleries, theatres, shops, and public markets. Emily Carr sits in the middle of these stimulating surroundings. The facilities at Emily Carr make use of the spacious corrugated steel and timber structures of the industrial era by adding vaulted foyer galleries, sky lit studios and vast technical workshops and computer labs. In 1994, the Institute opened a spacious 60,000 square foot addition that houses integrated media, painting and design, as well as the library.
Recently Emily Carr has constructed a five-million dollar, state of the art Intersections Digital Studio (IDS). IDS provides a substantial expansion to ECU’s research and experimental capabilities. A modular building design with projectors, displays and sound equipment, IDS makes possible a flexible environment where students and professionals with specialized knowledge in art, design and technology can collaborate in an interdisciplinary manner. IDS is of significant value to students in the Master of Applied Arts degree and will be opening up new research opportunities for faculty and staff.
At Emily Carr, students from around the world are challenged to explore innovative impulses and take risks with creative skills. The faculty at Emily Carr are working artists and designers who encourage experimentation with every artistic medium, from sculpture and photography to multimedia and industrial design. Emily Carr recognizes that communication these days relies more heavily on visual elements. This shift to visual communication offers many career opportunities for graduates. Earning a degree at Emily Carr involves more than just learning a body of knowledge. Graduates leave the University with critical thinking skills and professional values that they will use in life and in the pursuit of new knowledge throughout their careers.
Tours are offered to prospective students considering studies at Emily Carr. Tours take place on Fridays at 12:00 noon from mid September to mid April, excluding Fridays that fall on a statutory holiday, Christmas break and the dates of December 18 and 25, January 1 and February 19 and 26. Tour groups will meet in the main foyer of the North Building just a few minutes before 12:00 noon and will return at approximately 1:15 p.m. A brief information session is conducted after each tour. To book a tour contact Admissions at 604-844-3897 at least two weeks in advance.
High school groups are asked to contact Admissions at 604-844-3897 in advance to confirm availability. High school groups must be accompanied by a teacher (groups over 20 also require a teacher's aide).
