Sculpture and Expanded Practices

The sculpture curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinarity and the development of ideas and concepts through the study of three-dimensional form and space. Students explore sculptural practice that includes an understanding of its history and theory.

The techniques, materials and methods reflect the diversity of contemporary and traditional practices. Sculpture approaches that include video, installation, electronic media and kinetics, as well as the production of cast or constructed objects are encouraged. Assigned projects and readings at the introductory level provide a basis for independent projects at subsequent levels.

Courses range from investigation of concepts and materials in traditional and non-traditional media including topic specific subjects such as installation, sculpture and social spaces and public art. Student progress is achieved through active participation in creating sculptures and installations, workshop demonstrations, readings, discussions and group/individual critiques.

The sculpture and expanded practices studios provide excellent facilities equipped with professional wood, metal, plaster and mould-making/synthetics workshops in which students can produce projects in a variety of materials. Students also have access to a wide range of audiovisual equipment and a sculpture installation space.
