Mezzanine Gallery, Emily Carr University Library

"In Memory of..." an exhibition underlining December 6th, features work by ECU students Sunroop Dhillon, Denise Holland, Michael King, Yao Li, Alison Fast, Yifei Zhang, with reading suggestions by faculty and staff.

On December 6, 1989, fourteen women at L'Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal were singled out and murdered simply because of their gender. This horrific event functioned as an important catalyst for recognizing and supporting action against violence committed against women. In 1991, Canada's Parliament declared December 6 the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Violence against women continues to be a serious problem in Canada, particularly for Indigenous women and girls. The Government of Canada recently launched an independent inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) is committed to monitoring the progress of this inquiry and ensuring it addresses the systemic causes behind the high rates of violence against Indigenous women and girls.

For this exhibition, Emily Carr’s Status of Women Committee invited students to submit works that engage with this important anniversary. We also asked members of the University community to suggest books addressing this theme. These are on display along with selected excerpts.

In Memory of… is dedicated to the memory of all women who have experienced violence in their lives and to those who continue to battle it on a daily basis. We need to exert pressure on decision makers at all levels of government to develop comprehensive approaches to combat violence against women and girls, particularly for First Nations, Inuit and Métis women and girls. In the spirit of social justice and equity—let us dare to imagine and bring about change!

The Status of Women Committee is comprised of Annie Briard, Elizabeth MacKenzie, Lois Klassen, Peg Campbell, Cari Green and Carly Diab. For more information, please contact Annie Briard, ECUAD Status of Women Committee Chair: abriard@ecuad.ca
