The Financial Awards Handbook
The Financial Awards Handbook is published by the Emily Carr Institute to assist you in obtaining financial assistance while studying at the Institute. Financial assistance includes loans, scholarships, grants and bursaries. The Institute appreciates the support given our students by the many individual donors and organizations identified in this handbook. Click here to go to the Financial awards page.
International Students and Financial Assistance
Many international funding agencies will only consider funding students who are attending accredited degree-granting institutions. Emily Carr Institute meets this requirement as it is an approved public degree-granting institution chartered by the Province of British Columbia.
Citizens of the United States are eligible to apply for Stafford Loans to attend Emily Carr Institute. Stafford Loan applications packages are available from the Financial Awards Office.

Entrance Scholarships
Open to all students studying at the Institute.
Fifteen entrance scholarships are awarded each year to students beginning studies at Emily Carr Institute. Applications for entrance scholarships are not required. The Institute selects recipients based on academic and artistic merit.
BC High School Entrance Scholarships
The Institute makes available seven non-renewable Entrance Scholarships to recent BC secondary school graduates beginning studies in Foundation. Each award is equivalent to the full amount of tuition for two semesters of full-time study.
International Entrance Scholarships
The Institute awards six non-renewable International Entrance Scholarships to international students beginning studies in first, second or third year. Each award is equivalent to 50% of the amount of tuition for two semesters of full-time study.
Audain Foundation Annual Entrance Scholarship
The Audain Foundation Annual Entrance Scholarship, valued at up to $3500, is a tuition scholarship awarded to a BC student from outside the Greater Vancouver Regional District. This award is open to students beginning studies in first, second or third year.
The Victoria Liou and Isabel Chen Entrance Scholarship
The Victoria Liou and Isabel Chen Entrance Scholarship, valued at up to $3500, is a tuition scholarship awarded to a Canadian student beginning studies in first, second or third year.
Applications for entrance scholarships are not required. ECI will select students based on their academic and artistic merit.
First Nations Endowment Fund
The First Nations Endowment Fund was initiated through a $25,000 donation from BC Hydro. The First Nations Awards will be give to qualified First Nations Students and will be administered thought the Emily Carr Institute First Nations Office awards process. More Info here
Gunn Bursaries
The Gwyn and Aileen Gunn Bursary Endowment provide bursaries valued at a portion of the earned interest. A portion of the fund is designated to First Nations student. The First Nations bursaries will be administered through the Emily Carr First Nations awards process.
Canada Student Loans and Provincial Student Loan Funding
The Canada Student Loan Program is available to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and convention refugees only. Provincial funding is also available and varies based on your province of residence.
BCSAP - British Columbia Student Assistance Program
The BC Student Loan Assistance Program is a financial assistance program combining federal and provincial funds. It is a need-based program, and the amount of assistance you are eligible for is based upon your financial situation and in some cases, that of your family.
BCSAP applications take approximately six weeks to process. In order to receive your funding at the start of classes, it is recommended that you submit your application no later than July 15. Students can apply on - line at www.bcsap.bc.ca or can submit a paper application available from our Financial Awards Office.

National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation (NAAF)
The NAAF is a nationally registered charity established to actively assist talented Aboriginal artists by providing financial assistance for education and training initiatives in the performing, visual, crafted, media, literary, and graphic arts. The fund is available to Canadian Aboriginal peoples, status, non-status, Metis and Inuit. Applications are assessed by a jury of recognized Aboriginal artists, and eligible costs include tuition, and related expenses, including art supplies.
The deadlines for this program are: March 31 (for projects that begin AFTER June 1) and September 30 (for projects that begin AFTER December 1). Applications must be postmarked (in the mail) on or before March 31 or September 30 to be eligible for consideration. Applications that are post-marked after the deadlines will be returned.

Foundation for the Advancement of Aboriginal Youth (FAAY)
FAAY is designed to encourage Aboriginal students to remain in school and to pursue higher education. Aboriginal students who are Canadian citizens enrolled in a school located in Canada may apply for a bursary or scholarship. Students must demonstrate serious interest in furthering their educational and career development. Awards are based on contributions to family and community, academic performance, career goals and financial need. For an application, contact:

First Citizens Fund
The First Citizens fund student bursary program provides financial assistance to Aboriginal students enrolled in post secondary education. Aboriginal students who are BC residents and enrolled full-time in a recognized post-secondary university, college or institute, in a minimum two-year program are eligible to apply. The level of assistance will be determined by need and will reflect the amount of assistance received from other sources. The maximum level of assistance is $700 per year for Band or Tribal Council funded students and $2,000 per year for non-funded students. For applications and inquiries:

Robert Markle Scholarship
This scholarship has been established to honour the memory of Robert Markle, artist and teacher (1936 – 1990). Robert Markle understood very well the need students have for financial support and, as a Mohawk Indian, intensely interested in his heritage, realized how much more difficult it can be for a First Nations person to study art after high school. This scholarship is awarded annually to First Nations students in the first or klater year of a visual arts program at a post-secondary institution. Applicants must send a brief resume stating personal background and heritage, a selection of slides OR a small portfolio of recent work (including medium, size and date) and a letter of recommendation from an instructor. Mungo Martin Memorial Award BC Indian Arts Society of Victoria
In order to commemorate Mungo Martin, the late Kwakiutal Chief, artist, philosopher and carver, a number of awards ranging from $100 to $500 are made available from the proceeds of the Mungo Martin Memorial Fund. The awards are to assist people of First Nations ancestry to further their education, vocational training, skills and competence in First Nations art. It is emphasized that these awards are open to those who wish to further their general education or skills and in particular, those who seek to do creative work to further artistic heritage in painting, carving, music, dance, folklore and/or language.
