    My favourite thing to do in any library is to go to an unfamiliar section of the stacks and, craning my neck at that awkward angle, roam across the titles until something jumps out at me. I've found some of my most-loved books this way.

    Who are you? My name is Ksenia Cheinman and I am a student in the Master of Library and Information Studies program at UBC, currently doing a Professional Experience at the ECUAD library.

    What do you like about the library?
    The ECUAD library is like an oasis in the midst of an artistic desert that is Vancouver—having very few welcoming and publically accessible art libraries. To be honest, the first time I have experienced the space, since I do not belong to the ECUAD community, was this autumn to see an exhibition by the CAUSA collective and I was incredibly impressed with the space, its layout, and the resources available.

    I've always loved libraries ever since I was old enough to read. They are a learning commons in the best sense of that term--through books, I've been able to experience perspectives and encounter knowledge that I would not otherwise be able to access.     The library will be closed on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 until the new year. We will re-open on January 3, 2012.

  • Food for (Library) Fines

    From December 5 - 20, you can pay off your Library fines with food or cash donations for the Vancouver Food Bank.

    Each non-perishable food item counts as $1 towards your Library fines. The Library will also donate all cash fines received to the Food Bank. The Food Bank is able to triple the purchasing power of the donated dollar by buying in bulk.

    These are the Vancouver Food Bank's most needed food items:

    • Canned meat/fish
    • Peanut butter
    • Bags of whole wheat pasta/rice
    • Pasta sauce
    • Canned fruit/vegetables
    • Cereal
    • Baby formula
    • Baby food

  • Darwin on display

    The latest iteration of Darwin is on display in the library window. This is a project of Justin Novak's students who are in Illustration Practices: Toys/Figurines.

    Darwin is a celebration of the slippage between form, surface, and identity.

    Collaboratively designed and produced by students and faculty of the Illustration program at Emily Carr University, the project employs industrial ceramic processes but adopts the aesthetics and collaborative dynamics characteristic of the explosive "Urban Vinyl" subculture.
