This summer, Continuing Studies is busting out of the city and exploring programming in Penticton, Prince George and the Resort Community of Whistler. And as with each new semester, we are continuing to offer new courses, workshops and special events including:

Drawing From Almost Life is a new course held at the Beatty Biodiversity Museum of UBC that takes advantage of the natural history collection found there.

Illustration Iconography will continue to develop and broaden your illustration skills and your understanding of cultural context, with the focus on the symbolic resonance of images.

Offered within Industrial Design this summer, Electronic Objects: Arduino Micro-Processing and 3D Laser Cutting, explores the Arduino micro-processor and the laser cutter as a creative means of integrating electronic circuitry within 3D form.

If photography is your passion, new this semester is Black-and-White Film Photography: Darkroom Open Studio, an extended eleven week course specifically designed for those students that have already completed photography courses and are looking to continue to develop their photographic projects in a more open studio experience.

New to the Professional Development Workshop Series, The Artist’s Toolkit – Media Releases and Elevator Pitches, introduces the fundamentals of planning, creating and executing media releases and elevator pitches.

The Fine Arts Intensive in the Okanagan runs from August 8 to 23 at the Okanagan School of the Arts, Shatford Centre in Penticton. Presented by Emily Carr and the Okanagan School of the Arts, this intensive six-day workshop invites you to explore the fundamental aspects of materials, media and composition in fine art practices through this intensive six day course in beautiful Penticton! Students will learn to examine the relationship between concept and composition in two-dimensional art practices and develop compositional skills by investigating how line, shape, colour, texture and surface treatment enhance and influence form.

The Whistler Summer Art Workshops on the Lake take place during various dates from June to August 2014. These three-day workshops will allow you to delve into intensive visual arts workshops while enjoying the stunning backdrop of Alta Lake in Whistler. You will also be provided with the chance to work with renowned faculty, develop creative and technical skills, and have fun with an artistic group of peers – all in partnership with the Whistler Arts Council.

The Summer Satellite Studios for Teens take place in the Resort Community of Whistler from July 7 to 18 and in Prince George from July 14 to 25. These intensives are especially suited to teens with an interest in community research, mapping, drawing, or design. The Satellite Studios for Teens offer unique opportunities to work off-site with faculty from Emily Carr University for two weeks in the summer. Each studio is specific to its location, and introduces sketching, technical drawing, design thinking, and exploration of site - fundamental skills for work in the creative field. Intensive research and work in the community will inform a collaborative project that is shared with the public at the end of the program.

The Leeway, our open and resourced studio space, is pleased to welcome Sasha Krieger, our first Leeway Studio Resident. Sasha is an Emily Carr University alumna, whose interdisciplinary work explores issues surrounding originality and process in acts of creative production. The Leeway also continues to offer one hour free demos and three hour workshops this summer!

During the Vancouver Draw Down, we are offering Dead or Alive: Still Life and Life Drawing. This drop-in still life and life drawing workshop is free and supplies and equipment are provided!

The Sketchbook Project is also free and runs on July 7 and 8 outside of Emily Carr. This travelling, evolving library-in-a-trailer features more than 30,520 artists’ books contributed by creative people from over 130 countries.

Summer… the perfect time to enjoy Continuing Studies in the city or venture out of bounds!
