Community Projects

The mandate of the Emily Carr University’s Faculty of Culture and Community is to forge meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships with both non-profit organizations and industry, and to develop innovative curriculum that facilitates students laddering into BC communities and industry post -graduation.

The Faculty of Culture + Community is partnering with various companies in the metro Vancouver area and has created community projects courses which benefit the students and the companies they collaborate with. 

Community Project Courses

Dr. Peter Aids Foundation has been offered as a Community Projects course since Spring 2010. This course provides students with an ethical framework and methodologies for community practice. It focuses especially on projects that involve collaboration with marginal and at-risk communities such as the DTES (Downtown Eastside) in Vancouver. As part of this class, students at the Emily Carr University campus are given an opportunity to apply field research through site visits to the Dr. Peter Centre in Vancouver’s West End. The faculty team developing Community Projects includes Susan Stewart and Sabine Silberberg (co-instructors).

The Dr. Peter Centre West End provides interdisciplinary health services to people who are living with HIV/AIDS. The combined Day Health Program and 24-hour nursing care Residence is unique in Canada, with an innovative, comprehensive model of care that is built on acceptance and support, helping people find strength, offering respect, dignity and a sense of belonging to people who are suffering from multiple health and social challenges.

The Red Tent Campaign is another Community Projects course currently taught by Natalie Doonan. In this course, students collaborate with Pivot Legal Society in their Red Tent Campaign: Red Tent is an open source campaign spearheaded by Vancouver-based Pivot Legal Society. Across the country, individuals and organizations have become a part of the Red Tent Campaign to work toward the common goal of a funded national housing strategy that will end homelessness and ensure secure, adequate, accessible and affordable housing for all people living in Canada. http://www.redtents.org/ Students will learn how to apply their unique skills as practicing artists, in working with issues of housing and homelessness. Students will be guided through a collaborative process with Pivot Legal Society, in which they will develop a work in public space, with the goal of raising support for a Canadian National Housing Strategy.

Community Partnerships

Translink and Emily Carr University of Art + Design 

In 2010, “Between Spaces” livened up Burrard Station with visual works on the walls alongside the escalators and in the courtyard surrounding the ticket vending machines.  The works will be displayed for up to two years; there is a tentative plan to hold a showcase of the works.  Now, with "Art in Transit", customers on buses and SkyTrains in Metro Vancouver will have a great reason to lift up their eyes this year, as Translink and Emily Carr University of Art + Design launch Art In Transit, a rolling showcase of some of British Columbia’s most promising visual artists.

PNE and Emily Carr University of Art + Design

For a second year, Emily Carr will be partnering with the PNE Container Art Show. This unique, multi-disciplinary show is housed in 12- to 20-foot shipping containers, which will be set up in the Spirit Plaza area on the PNE grounds. The 17 day show will be open-themed. The jury will select work that reflects the diversity of Vancouver artists. It will be up during the PNE Fair and we are anticipating drawing almost 1 million people over the 17 day fair.

Emily Carr University holds a special competition for two of the containers, which are reserved for our students. This competition will be judged by an internal jury comprised of faculty members. Students in 3rd and 4th year and the MAA program are eligible to submit an entry. The selected artists will be paid a $500 installation fee as well as a $1000 artist fee.
