Thank you to everyone who turned out for The Comeback 2013! It was so great to reconnect with all the alumni who attended. Things got off to an amazing start on Friday night with The Talkback, powered by PechaKucha. Alumni Association Vice-President David Humphrey started the night by welcoming over 125 alumni “home” for the opening night of the weekend. Emily Carr President + Vice-Chancellor Ron Burnett then spoke on the reciprocal relationship between alumni and the university, and the importance of working together as we plan for the new campus at Great Northern Way.
Things showed no sign of slowing down on Saturday morning when, despite the dreary weather, alumni and faculty made their own sunshine at the Alumni + Faculty BBQ (helped out by hot chocolate and mini marshmallows!). And alumni celebrated on Saturday night by joining their peers and current Emily Carr students for a casual night of networking at Bridges Pub at our Industry Pub Night. For more information on the weekend’s event, please visit The Comeback website.
Many reunions took place throughout the weekend as alumni got a chance to reconnect with former classmates and faculty. We look forward to seeing you all at The Comeback 2014!
It was great to see you at The Comeback!
Emily Carr was thrilled to host The Comeback alumni reunion weekend September 28 + 29, 2012. The weekend was kicked off by a pecha kucha style lecture featuring alumni from a wide range of disciplines and eras. 10 x 10 offered a chance for participants to see what some of their fellow alumni have been up to since they graduated. 10 presenters took to the stage and were each given 5 minutes to present 10 slides on the theme: What I have done since I left Emily Carr. The speakers were: Galan Akin (‘97), Joanna Ambrosio (‘09), Judson Beaumont (‘85), Erin Boniferro (‘03), Marina Bychkova (‘06), Kevin Eastwood (‘99), Brandon Gabriel (‘06), Jeff Hamada (’06) Chris Jones (‘00), Lindsey Pollard (’94) and the event also featured MC: Ian Penn (’10). Following the lecture guests enjoyed snacks and beverages and grooved to the sounds of Labour of Love featuring alumni DJ, Tobias Ottahal (‘09).
On Saturday, alumni were invited to take part in Backstage Pass, exclusive behind-the-scenes tours of the campus in order to get a slice of the variety of innovative and ground breaking work going on at the University. Participants also got a fist hand look at The Leeway, a new studio space at Emily Carr, along with some of the other facilities offered to members of the Emily Carr Alumni Association.
Also taking place Saturday was Emily Con!, Emily Carr’s own comic con. Attendees chatted with visiting artists and also got a chance to make their own mark by participating in the Comix Jam, an interactive live comic strip that was created throughout the day. Big thanks to The Comeback sponsor: Blenz Coffee who provided free lattes all day Saturday for everyone that took part.
The weekend was not only enjoyable to all but it also raised $4,580 in support of Emily Carr and Alumni activities.
“Amazing to see such a broad range of creative folks all talking about their successes after Emily Carr. I spent the entire time half listening and half dreaming up new projects for myself – part jealousy, part inspiration: isn't that what lights the fire?”
Carley Hodgkinson (‘02), Attendee
“I deeply valued the experience and enjoyed seeing the contributions my peers have been making in the world of arts and culture!”
Brandon Gabriel (’06), Presenter
“I love coming back to Emily Carr--it really feels like being home again.”
Lindsey Pollard (’94), Presenter
