Penny Leong

Penny Leong Browne is an artist and writer interested in the ways objects mediate through visual and textual languages. Her current project, Relieve, Relax, Revive (re/given), is a participatory installation that materializes the online social world of Craigslist Vancouver “Free Stuff” by collecting cardboard boxes and other used objects and recontextualizing them into a gallery. Comprised of eight objects, each presented in a cardboard box inscribed with mappings, text and image transfers, the work re-evaluates the abject - used, everyday objects that people no longer want or need, as ways of giving between strangers and the potentially meaningful connections made, however ephemeral they may be. The event, (re/given), engages the public in the acts of receiving the objects that become “revived” through their re-giving. A text archive of Craigslist Vancouver Free Stuff accompanies the installation.
