In the Loop

description

In the Loop is a tablet application for youth with autism to learn about their online identities and social boundaries.

With today's prevalent use of social media, younger generations need to be prepared and informed of potential dangers that may jeopardize personal safety. Autism is a neurological developmental disorder that hinders abilities in the areas of socialization, communication and behaviour. Autistic youth with social deficits struggle more than most to understand concepts of social boundaries. In the Loop is a guide to teach students with autism about their personal online identities and social structures. The app facilitates learning about the benefits and risks of using online services by enabling young people to create a personalized social map that they can refer to. It becomes a visual reference for parents and educators to use as a teaching tool to guide reflection about this social space. The structure of the app addresses how to organize your people in your social space, managing identities and contacts, and sharing content. Utilizing the app will build a mental model of digital social boundaries to prepare them to navigate safely online and gain insight in their offline social lives as well. For this thesis project, I have teamed up with the professionals at POPARD who provided knowledgeable insight and research during the design process.

Be aware, be prepared and get in the loop.
