Mycelium

description

Mycelium explores the medium of textile as skin, as it becomes an extension of the body. This interactive sculpture makes us realize the complexity of the organisms around us, as each stitch demonstrates the bind that forms the whole of the piece. Mycelium was intended to bring the public into a mental space of the senses, to slow us down to the most basic sense of touch. Individuals interacted with the space within the sculpture, which is quite different from what one would expect; we find moments of entrapment, and tension, as well as moments of release and human touch. It creates an interesting dinamic where we think we will be able to fit our whole hand inside it only to realize that the path we wanted doesn't exist, and when we think we won't be able to get somewhere we are met by another persons hand who is also exploring this structure.

This sculptrue was installed in the Emily Carr University parking lot in the sprig of 2011, to enhance the mossy nature of the structure, which is as it's name pronounces it a connective growth.
