This course introduces you to the basics of printmaking through three different techniques: intaglio, lithography, and Japanese woodblock. You will start with intaglio as you learn to work with drypoint on plexiglass. In the lithography section you will draw on polymer sheets, then print your image using a litho press. You will complete your introduction with Japanese style woodblock using hand rubbing as you explore relief printing. Discussion and historical review will supplement hands-on work. On completion, you will have a broad knowledge of printmaking and three sets of prints.

Shinsuke Minegishi

Shinsuke Minegishi is an award winning print and book media artist from Tokyo, Japan. He graduated from Emily Carr and was invited to study alternative print media techniques through the graduate program at Tama Art University in Tokyo. Minegishi is an active international artist, who is in multiple solo, group, invitational, and adjudicated exhibitions annually. He has shown at private and public galleries and museums throughout the world, which includes the Richmond, Burnaby, and Vernon Art Galleries. His print media arts have received several international awards and can be found in numerous public collections throughout the world. Minegishi’s book media arts have also been awarded and shown at many galleries and book fairs. His books can be found in special collections at major city and university libraries worldwide, including the British Library, UCLA, University of Denver, McGill, UBC, SFU, U of A, and Vancouver Public Library.

* 1 pair of rubber gloves

- 1 Japanese paper (to be discussed in class)
- 1 ballpoint pen(s) and Sharpies (to be discussed in class)
- 4 Foam brushes from OPUS (to be discussed in class) 
- Water-based inks, water colour trays  (to be discussed in
class)
