HUMN 306 SU02: Studies in Humanities: Design
This course offers the opportunity to explore specific issues and texts in the humanities. The issues and readings will vary but students will gain a better understanding of contemporary thought and methods in philosophy, history, or literature, especially as they relate to critical issues in design.
Topic: Emotional Design
While it is true that design has become an often research-based practice, there has also been recently a countervailing trend toward simultaneously incorporating an intuitive and interdisciplinary approach to one’s work in this field. So taking its title from Donald Norman’s 2005 Book Emotional Design (from which we will read some excerpts) and in light of its Humanities designation, the course will also explore potential design philosophies, approaches, and practices from number of areas including nature, psychology, urban planning, advertising, animation, and art; one example of this interplay is perhaps that of Steve Jobs who according to the New York Times had “an ‘inexhaustible interest’ in the books of William Blake – the mad visionary 18th century mystic poet and artist” so we may be looking at Blake (and Jobs) as well.
