INDD 230 S001: Ceramics: Introductory

Provides a broad introduction to the full range of hand building and wheel throwing processes and to diverse ideas and attitudes present in contemporary ceramics. Students gain basic knowledge of various forming methods and learn to throw various forms. They are also introduced to glazing and firing diverse kilns. Using clay, students acquire practical, critical and historical tools to consider ceramics within contemporary culture and current art practices. Assigned projects are structured around concepts, processes and techniques as they relate to utilitarian pots, vessels and sculpture. Students are expected to present assigned and self-directed projects at critiques. Demonstrations, discussions and presentations are regularly scheduled.
