PHOT 319 S090: Telling Story (on-Line)
This course asks: How do we tell a story in an age of information using photography? Story can locate both teller and recipient in the transitional experience of coming to know. Where we come to know, how, when and with whom are questions that lead towards the authorship of our own lives-those stories that constitute living immediate culture. This studio based course (with seminar component) will place the photographic stories of its participants in the centre of the group's inquiry. Participants will develop their skills to make photographs, edit sequence, and work with a range of non-linear narrative structures and forms including the use of text. Relationships between oral, written, photographic and electronic media will be experienced and investigated. This course is offered on-line. Off campus students are required to have access to computers, scanners and camera equipment.

Sandra Semchuk is second generation Canadian of Ukrainian and Polish
ancestry. She has been a photographer for 40 years, and is a
co-founder of the Photographers Gallery in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan,
Canada and a teacher at Emily Carr University. Sandra's photographs and collaborations have been exhibited widely including at Presentation House Gallery, Vancouver, The Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon, The Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, Arizona, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, fotofeis in Scotland, the Museu D'art Contemporani in Barcelona and at Urban Shaman in Winnipeg. The Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography in Ottawa has toured the exhibit How far back is home... Her autobiographical photographs are discussed in Penny Cousineau-Levine's book Faking Death, Canadian Art Photography and the Canadian Imagination, and in the NFB Film 11 Canadian Photographers by Hermegilde Chaisson.
