Start-Up Your Business

Platform is a six-month program that prepares enterprising designers to start their own business. An innovative combination of intensive classroom workshops and  mentorships with industry professionals help students to develop and perfect their business plan and pitch to be presented at an Industry Pitch Night in March 2013.

At the end of this program, students will have:
•    a draft business plan, including a financial plan and budget
•    a professional relationship with a mentor working in their field
•    an opportunity to present their startup idea at Industry Pitch Night in March 2013

COURSE FORMAT
Weekly classes at Emily Carr: October 13 - November 24
Saturdays from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Weekly classes address topics including:
•    financial planning and risk management
•     market analysis
•     communications strategies
•     intellectual property management
•     Basic business administration

Mentorship
November 2012 – March 2013 as arranged by students and mentors
Each student will be matched with a mentor i in the business community based on the nature of their business proposal. These mentors will provide advice and support in the transition into real-world implementation of their business plan.

Mentors will be selected from a diverse pool of companies including Apple, RIM, Lululemon, Microsoft, DIGIBC, Electronic Arts, Facebook, Fluevog and Mountain Equipment Co-op.

FACULTY AND ADVISORS

Lori Baxter is a business management consultant in the social profit sector. She has 25 years of experience as a senior executive in roles including Director, Arts at 2010 Legacies Now Society; Executive Director, the Greater Vancouver Alliance for Arts and Culture; and President of Solutions Marketing Inc. She has taught courses in management and marketing at BCIT, Capilano College, and Douglas College.

Michael Tippet is the co-founder of NowPublic, former Executive Director of Growlab and the founder of Ayoudo, a Vancouver-based startup that integrates social media technology and neighbourly assistance.
