Interactive + Social Media Arts
The newly launched Interactive + Social Media Arts (ISMA) major is intended for students who are interested in the social media landscape and the creative use of computer technologies. ISMA offers a 4 year Major in a Bachelor of Media Arts. ISMA students can focus on practices that involve robotics, mobile apps, digital image making, social media platforms, interactive sound and video, interactive wearables, video for the web, amongst others. Students gain practical programming and production skills for use in our current culture where creative social media and software experts are in such high demand.
The ISMA major challenges students to explore new technologies while developing a critical point of view regarding the social and political aspects of contemporary culture and the roles that technologies play within it. The curriculum meshes studio/lab based practice with the exchange of ideas between fellow students, visiting artists and faculty. The technical instruction is augmented with philosophical and sociological curriculum, and courses in the history of interactivity and its role in political and social movements. These perspectives set out to challenge conventional ideas about what constitutes art practice in the 21st century. The program takes advantage and links with the exceptional expertise of other areas of Emily Carr University, such as Communication Design, Industrial Design, Interaction Design, Film and Video, and Animation.
