Applications to the Emily Carr University Research Ethics Board

The Emily Carr University Research Ethics Board receives applications for review from faculty, student, or external researchers who are conducting research that involves humans within the Emily Carr University context. In most cases REB applications fall into one of two categories:

NOTE: All applicants and reserachers are required to complete the TCPS2:CORE (Course on Research Ethics) before an application is approved. Certificates of completion must be included in the application.

In all ECU-REB applications, the Principal Investigator(s) or Principal Student Investigator are responsible for ensuring that the research proposal and all of the relevant documentation is submitted on time to the ECU-REB for review. Notification of acceptance and approval from the ECU-REB will be directed to the Principal Investigator(s) or Principal Student Investigator, the Graduate Student Supervisor (if applicable), the Dean of the faculty in which the research takes place, and the VP Academic Provost.

The ECU-REB conducts both Expedited and Proportionate Reviews. Expedited Review typically involves course-based applications with minimal risk. Turnaround time is approximately two weeks. Proportionate Review typically involves projects that propose primary and/or mixed research methods such as interviews, participant prototype testing, and/or online surveys. The REB is charged with assessing these projects for risks and benefits. Proportionate Review can take two – four weeks depending on the nature of the research (i.e., a vulnerable or sensitive group), number and type of research methods (i.e., co-creation), co-investigator/partner (i.e., colleague at another university), regulatory compliance (i.e., Vancouver School Board), and the informed consent and/or assent process.
