On August 31, 2014, Krystal Kiran (House of Kiran) hosted a party to celebrate her 30th birthday.  But this was a party with a purpose: it was a fundraiser to support the Maple Batalia Memorial Scholarship for the Arts.

The party also featured a screening of Kiran’s five-minuted BravoFACT short film, “Thy Beauty’s Doom – In Memory of Maple Batalia” which recently premiered at the Punjabi International Film Festival.  The film is a dance/art/music film showcasing the paintings and artwork of the late Maple Batalia, a gifted visual artist, actor, model and aspiring doctor who died tragically in an act of senseless violence in 2011.

Maple Batalia with her paintingsTo honour Maple’s memory, House of Kiran established the Maple Batalia Memorial Scholarship for the Arts.  Krystal Kiran shares, “Maple embodied a fierce dedication to her art and craft, and the breadth of her work as an artist and performer will inspire and motivate young South Asian-Canadian women to look within themselves to harness and refine their creative talents.”
