3 credit coop position in the Emily Carr University Library

Co-op Description: The Artists’ Books Coop will provide a 3rd or 4th year student with experience working with the Library’s growing collection of Artists’ Books. In collaboration with the librarians and library staff the candidate will have the opportunity to research within the collection and write short reviews of publications for the Artists’ Books Research Blog. It will incorporate aspects of exhibition, marketing, blogging, learning resource creation, and independent research. The student will be introduced to an exciting community of artists’, writers, designers, and publishers immersed in different publication practices. The position will build on the practice of studentcentered, active learning in a collaborative, supportive environment.

■ Research Tool Development
The student will assist in the creation of pedagogical tools in the form of reviews, thematic lists, photo
essays and guides for the Artists’ Books Research Blog.

■ Blogging
The student will research and write a weekly blog entry for the Artists’ Books Research Blog. This will be an opportunity to explore the collection and link our artists' publications to current events, exhibitions or visiting
artists'.

■ Exhibition + Display
The student will gain experience preparing materials and designing simple posters for displays, classes and special projects . There will also be an opportunity to help install and document an exhibition of Artists' Books travelling from Emily Carr to UBC.

Learning Outcomes:                                                                               The Artists’ Books Coop position will culminate in two main activities, as follows:

■ The creation of a series of blog entries that animate and highlight works from the Artists' Books Collection throughout the semester.

■ Experience assisting with the organization, installation and documentation of an exhibition of Artists’ Books at UBC.

Duration:                                                                                                         ■ A minimum of 7 work hours per week during one academic semester, or the equivalent of 3 credit hours.

■ The work schedule is to be negotiated with the supervising librarian and will occur over the 12 week period.

Qualifications: 

■ You must be a student currently enrolled in 3rd or 4th year at Emily Carr University working
towards a degree in Visual Arts, Design or other related fields with a GPA of 3.0 or above

■ Ability to work independently and within a team

■ Strong writing + research skills

■ Basic graphic design skills

■ Experience with Photoshop and Illustrator

■ Handson experience in a library, bookstore, museum or archive is a plus!

■ Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office, Photoshop, WordPress)
