ECU Students on Exchange
Information About Studying Abroad
As a second year student at Emily Carr, you can apply to become an exchange student for one semester of your third year of study at a variety of art and design schools in North America, Europe and Australia [PDF, 136k].
The Student Exchange Selection Committee, composed of Faculty and Student Services representatives, approves applications for the exchange program. Since there are normally more applicants than can be accommodated by the program, selection is competitive.
Both part-time and full-time students are eligible to apply; however, students must be full-time in their third year while on exchange. If you are interested in the program, be sure to read how to apply.
Please note students who transfer to Emily Carr at the third-year level are not eligible to apply for the exchange program.
Information Sessions
Information sessions for second year Emily Carr students are held each November, with application forms available beginning in January. In the fall semester, all second year students are notified via email to their Emily Carr accounts of the upcoming information session.
The application deadline is the Friday before Reading Week in February and the Exchange Committee selection meeting takes place in March.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for the exchange program, you must achieve a minimum 3.0 grade point average on your first semester of second year studies.
As an Exchange Student
- You continue to pay tuition to Emily Carr.
- You maintain your eligibility for financial awards including Canada Student Loans while on exchange.
- You are responsible for your travel and living costs and may be responsible for lab or other fees at the host institution. You are also responsible for your own accommodation.
- You should register in a program of studies at the host institution that will allow you to maintain normal progress toward your Emily Carr degree.
- You should keep a journal, document your works-in-progress with photographs, and be prepared to discuss your work with Emily Carr faculty upon return.
After Your Exchange
The University would like students to share their exchange experiences with Emily Carr students, faculty and staff. The exchange experience is for you, but is for your peers as well… what you bring back to the classroom through new insights, approaches, and perspectives benefits your classmates and teachers.
You will participate with work in a Student Exchange Exhibit given in the fall of fourth year. And, as a former exchange participant, you will have the opportunity to share your new knowledge and insights with next year's group of exchange students at the information and orientation sessions that will take place after your return.
