Visiting Exchange Students

Information for Exchange Students from Partner Institutions

Emily Carr University of Art + Design welcomes incoming exchange students from our partner institutions and from other Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) Mobility schools each year. Students are invited to spend one semester of their third (or penultimate) year of post-secondary education at Emily Carr.

Who Can Participate

You can only participate in an exchange if you are currently attending an institution that has a formal exchange agreement with Emily Carr or is an AICAD member school participating in the Student Mobility Program.

How to Apply

The International or Exchange Office or the Mobility Coordinator at your home institution must forward your application to Emily Carr on your behalf. Only applications recommended by officials at a student’s home institution are considered. If you are an exchange coordinator, read more about this process.

To support your application, you will need to provide your Exchange Coordinator with a “letter of motivation” giving details of your goals for the exchange and a portfolio (minimum 12 images on CD, DVD or online) of your recent work.

Exchange Policies

  • The language of instruction at the Emily Carr is English. You must have sufficient proficiency in English to be eligible for exchange (this determination may be made at the discretion of your home institution).
  • Students elected for exchange continue to pay tuition to their home institution. No tuition is collected by the hosting institution. However, any studio or material fees incurred through class registration (e.g. art supplies fees, film developing fees, etc.) may be collected by the host institution.
  • You must apply to and receive approval from a Canadian consulate for any necessary visas and immigration documents to enter Canada and study.
  • You must maintain adequate health insurance while participating in the exchange. You should make your own arrangements for insurance prior to leaving your home institution.
  • You are responsible for finding your own housing for the period of your stay, although assistance with locating housing is provided whenever possible.
