Foundation Registration Guidelines

Before registering, plan your schedule and include alternatives in case you have to waitlist for your first choice. Be sure to read the Registration Basics to learn how to use insideEC.

Please note that three credit courses have 3 hours per week of instruction and six credit courses have 6 hours per week of instruction.

Consult the Foundation Requirements to aid in choosing courses.

Fall Semester (15 credits)

Required Courses:

Core Course - Choose ONE:

The core course you choose in the Fall semester will determine your choice of core courses in the Spring semester. Please see the Foundation Requirements document for more information.

  • FNDT 160 Core Media Studio I (6 credits)
  • FNDT 161 Core Design Studio I (6 credits)
  • FNDT 164 Core Visual Arts I (6 credits)

Foundation Forum

The Foundation Forum is a series of lectures scheduled throughout the year, on Mondays from 11:45am-12:45pm, with topics that include art, media, design and University program information. Students registered in nine or more credits must register for the Foundation Forum (FNDT 001). Notes taken during these lectures will be considered as part of the student's individual course evaluation for grades. Students registered in fewer than nine credits are welcome, but not obliged to attend.

The Foundation Forum offers speakers and performers, and will cover important information on requirements for second year. Faculty members will present detailed information about the various programs, including how to apply and what to expect if accepted. Students who do not attend these talks miss out on important details relevant to their second year of study. Artists, designers and performers are also brought in to inspire and encourage our student's creative process.

Frequency of Course Offerings

Students who are studying Foundation on a part-time basis should be aware that not all courses are offered every semester. The following information should help in course planning:

  • AHIS 102, ENGL 100 and FNDT 106
Best availability in Fall, limited availability in Spring and Summer
  • AHIS 103, DHIS 101, ENGL 101 and FNDT 112
Best availability in Spring, limited availability in Summer and Fall
  • FNDT 106, 107, 108 and 110
Best availability in Fall, but also available in Spring
  • Elective Studio courses
Best availability in Spring, limited availability in Summer and Fall

Prior/Transfer Credit

If you have completed courses at another recognized college or university you will have been evaluated for transfer credit when official transcripts are received in Student Services. If you have taken courses at Emily Carr, or have been granted transfer credit, you will find those courses recorded in your student record in your InsideEC account.  The transfer credit will be entered only after final official transcripts have been received by Emily Carr.  Any questions related to transfer credit can be directed to April Goodwin-Smith in Student Services.

Second Year Courses

Students who have completed the prerequisites for second year courses may register in 200 level courses, provided there is room in their schedule. However, students will have to wait until the registration restrictions are removed in order to register (see registration dates). Any Foundation student who registers for a second year course without meeting the prerequisites will be removed from the course before the Fall semester begins.
