Irving K. Barber          British Columbia Scholarship Society

Irving K. Barber is an entrepreneur, philanthropist and a visionary thinker.  As the founder of Slocan Forest Products in 1978, Dr. Barber successfully built the company to be a leader among lumber producers.  His tireless work supporting research in the forest industry and his desire to create scholarship programs for greater education in British Columbia has benefited many people throughout his career.  A number of these educational programs have assisted Emily Carr University of Art + Design students in their academic pursuits in the areas of sculpture, visual arts and industrial design.  To date, The Irving K. IDEA Award Winner: Marten Sims, Darwin’s Surfaces

Congratulations to Marten Sims, winner of Emily Carr’s IDEA Art Award, 2011!

The IDEA Art Award was established in 2009 through a generous donation by two anonymous donors in consultation with the Healing Art Committee at VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation and Emily Carr University of Art + Design.  The purpose of the IDEA Art Award is to encourage Emily Carr’s emerging artists’ creativity, community involvement, and engagement; and to use art to neutralize negative perceptions of hospitals by creating a welcoming and caring environment for patients, patients’ families, and hospital staff.

Darwin’s Surfaces is a collection of photographs that provides an exceptional illustration of the vibrancy of life. Shot from a unique perspective, Marten’s work demonstrates an eye for the intimate splendour of the natural world.

As Marten describes, “The concept was based on the idea that our mother, Planet Earth, allows us to survive by being strong, fit and healthy, and the Galapagos Islands is a beautiful example of how this has been made possible when an ecosystem is supported by healthy networks and natural ecosystems.”

The photographic collection replaces the old posters and signage that previously adorned the walls in the hospital’s Emergency waiting room, and inspired other changes to the space including new, comfortable seating.  With striking colour, Darwin’s Surfaces affects the observant with a depth of delight, providing an atmosphere of warmth and positivity for the hospital community.

With the installation complete, Marten Sims joins 2010 IDEA Art Award winner Krista Janke as a contributing artist to the hospital’s prestigious collection, which includes works by Gordon Smith, Jack Shadbolt, Sylvia Tait and Martha Sturdy.

This year’s IDEA Art Award competition will launch in September, offering another emerging artist the opportunity to create a friendly space in a unique setting.

RBC Donates $20,000 to Benefit Aboriginal Students

Emily Carr University of Art + Design is pleased to announce that RBC has committed $20,000 ($10,000 each year for the next two years) to provide urgently needed support for Aboriginal students at Emily Carr.

A portion of the donation has been earmarked to establish the RBC Emerging Aboriginal Artist Award; the balance is allocated to the RBC Aboriginal Awards to help reduce the financial barriers that can prevent students from achieving their educational goals.
