The Omineca Arts Centre is a new art space in Prince George that will enhance regional capacity for arts and culture through events, exhibitions, residencies, workshops, educational programming, and research. This project was initiated by an emerging group of artists, curators, and community organizers based in Prince George in collaboration with Emily Carr University of Art + Design. The Omineca Arts Centre occupies a storefront on unceded Lheidli T’enneh Territory in Prince George. It is the former site of the Neighbourhood Time Exchange | Downtown Prince George, which hosted a series of 9 community-driven artist-in-residence projects developed by Emily Carr University in 2016-2017.

Frank Lewis (posthumous) was one of four inductees into the Oak Bay Fine Arts Hall of Fame in February 2017.

Mr. Lewis was born in Winnipeg in 1932, but moved to Victoria at the age of 14. He attended the Vancouver School of Art, during which time he learned from artists such as Jack Shadbolt, Gordon Smith, Arthur Erickson and Donald Jarvis.

He earned acclaim for his professional illustration work and was featured in the prestigious New York Society of Illustrators Show in 1963. In the late sixties his painting began to change and evolve on a larger scale, as witnessed on the construction fence of the Vancouver Court House.

Jeremy Shaw Wins $50,000 Sobey Art Award

Jeremy Shaw (BFA '00) was announced as the winner of the 2016 Sobey Art Award at a gala event on November 1, 2016, at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. 

The Sobey Art Award is the pre-eminent prize for Canadian artists 40 and under. Presented annually, the award celebrates some of our country's most exciting young artists and provides significant financial recognition. The winner receives $50,000 and each of the four finalists receive $10,000.

Seeun Kim | Gold Lion at Cannes Lions 2015

Emily Carr alumna Seeun Kim ('10) won a Gold Lion at Cannes Lions 2015 for her recent project Look at Me for Samsung.

As a creative art director she worked on the campaign at Cheil Worldwide and developed an app which helps children with autism make eye contact. The campaign which already has won both Silver and Bronze in Mobile this week at Cannes Lions, as well as a Silver Lion in PR.

Student-Designed Shovels Break Ground, Construction Begins

On Friday, April 24, 2015, Emily Carr University special guests broke ground at a ceremony to marking the launch of construction for our new campus.

As part of the celebration, four Emily Carr undergraduate communication design students created and designed the seven shovels to mark this historic event.  

The seven shovels were created to represent seven distinct areas within Emily Carr’s community.

1. Foundation Year – triangle motif symbolizes a pyramid, upward movement and focus, the journey students travel while pursuing their undergraduate degrees

2. Faculty of Culture + Community – the circles represent the group, and the connection we all share with one another, which forms the fabric of culture

Vanessa Hall-Patch | Bradley International Print and Drawing Exhibition

Shop Technologies Coordinator and Continuing Studies instructor Vanessa Hall-Patch has been awarded second place for her piece House sampler, land sampler at the 35th Bradley International Print and Drawing Exhibition.

The Bradley International Print and Drawing Exhibition is the second-longest running juried print and drawing competition in the United States. Every two years it features contemporary graphic artwork from around the globe. This year the 35th Bradley International features the work of 108 artists and the juror is Beth Grabowski, Professor and Assistant Department Chair at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
