Emily Carr University and Rennie Collection are pleased to present an artist talk by American artist Robert Beck/Robert Buck, on the occasion of his first Canadian exhibition from March 2 to June 8, 2013. A catalogue will accompany the exhibition, with an essay by James Voorhies.
 
In 2008, Robert Beck changed his surname by a single vowel to Buck. This act of artistic self-nomination, a work of art itself, was precipitated by what he had achieved through his work as Beck, which was often autobiographical in content and persistently diverse in form. As an alias, Buck appealed to the artist for its precision and associations: stag, son, cash, to throw off.
 

Ciprian Mureşan, and the rest of the ‘Cluj Generation’ with which he is loosely affiliated, came of age in post-communist Romania. Through drawing, film and installation he questions with characteristic humour, the connections between economic, social and political structures. In his talk he will discuss the major themes and propositions in his work which grow out of an examination of this context in which East meets West, and new and old systems of belief come into contact with each other.

Hervé and Maillet create performance-lectures that draw from multiple sources, including science fiction, genre movies, autonomous objects, academic discourse,and anecdotes.

In this talk they will discuss their practice encompassing performance and filmmaking alongside their work as the I.I.I.I. (International Institute for Important Items). Their performance Scholar’s Rock, Jan 26 to Feb 3 at the Contemporary Art Gallery, is generously supported by Institut Français and the Consulat général de France à Vancouver, and presented with PuSh International Performing Arts Festival.

Graduate Studies in partnership with the Contemporary Art Gallery, present an Artist Talk with Nathan Coley.

Coley's exhibition Knowledge, Kindliness and Courage opens Thursday,  November 22 at the Contemporary Art Gallery.

Coley lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland. He has exhibited internationally including The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne; The National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh; Bergen Kunsthall, Norway; Tate Britain and Centre d'Art Contemporain, Paris. He is represented by Haunch of Venison in London and New York.

Emily Carr University of Art + Design and the Rennie Collection are pleased to present an artist talk by Scottish artist Andrew Grassie, on the occasion of his first solo North American museum exhibition (September 29, 2012 - January 26, 2013).

A casual glance at one of Andrew Grassies' diminutive, hyper-realistic pictures, one might think they are viewing documentation photographs of an exhibition or of an artist's studio. A closer inspection reveals Grassies' works to be carefully constructed paintings made using egg tempera-based pigments, an antiquated medium known for its permanence - a remarkable juxtaposition to the fragility and disposability of photography.

The Faculty of Graduate Studies in partnership with the Contemporary Art Gallery is proud to present Los Angeles based artist Matthew Monahan who will give a formal lecture on his work.

The TD Guest Speaker/Designer in Residence Program and Emily Carr are proud to present designer and Project M Founder, John Bielenberg and his featured talk, When Wrong is Right.

In 2003, John created an immersive program called Project M that is designed to inspire and educate young designers, writers, photographers, and filmmakers by proving that their work—especially their “wrongest” thinking—can have a significant impact on communities. Since 2003, Project M has developed projects in Alabama, Baltimore, Connecticut, Costa Rica, Detroit, Germany, Ghana, Iceland, Maine, Minneapolis, and New Orleans.
