Vancouver Convention Centre's Living Roof

video

description

I wanted to direct the story of the site in a way that it highlights its contribution to the present community in Vancouver as well as reflect the importance of what once was on this site. For years, the Convention Centre has been a key icon for Vancouver’s International Relations. The Convention Centre’s construction further redefined itself among the International Community by integrating the largest living non-industrial living roof on their building.

Underwing

description

The purpose of the Under Wing kinetic awning is to take advantage of the unique situation of a rounded corner entrance to a building. The client is a retail tenant and desires a unique awning design that signals the opening of the store and is inviting to customers.

The awning will provide shelter from rain for the entry to the building, but should not block sunlight. The mechanism will be human operated and the movement of the awning should create a beautiful spectacle. The shape of the awning will transform in order to wrap around the curved portion of the corner façade. When open, the awning will expose its kinetic nature.

Sixty° home

description

The 60 Degree home is a 160 square foot design which makes use of a new building technique that utilizes Cross Laminated Timber. The targeted user groups were students and recent immigrants- groups with lower income who had recently arrived in the community. We designed an affordable home in the context of a multiple-home arrangement which encourages community engagement and pride in one’s self and home.

The design process was comprised of iterative physical modeling with some user research as a driver. Field trips to different wood processing and modeling facilities informed our work, and weekly review sessions with our Professor and peers helped us to remain on track.

"Compact Coastal Living"

description

Combining local, innovative materials, modern design, and "off-the-grid" energy solutions, "Compact Coastal Living" seeks to re-imagine the traditional summer cabin. At under 180 square feet, the space is divided into four distinct quadrants, but encourages users to slide open windows and doors, blurring the line between indoor and outdoor space.

Sixty° Home

description

The 60 Degree Home is a project that examines the essential aspects of living in small dwellings.

The aim was to design a 160-square-foot housing unit that can be arranged into a larger system. While the chosen site was the Great Northern Way Campus in Vancouver, a developing community of four academic institutions, the small home will address the needs of students and newcomers to Vancouver. Another important part of the project was to demonstrate the benefits of using Cross Laminated Timber, an emerging material that is suitable for building prefabricated homes in BC. A collaboration with Lorea Sinclaire, Rachel Simpson, Mina Ghaani.

sixty°home

description

Sixty°home is prefabricated modular architecture using Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) designed for students, low-income individuals, and new immigrants.  The 60° angle implemented into every unit allows for various stacking formations that can be arranged to create communal spaces for socializing and greenery; ultimately, promoting interaction among individuals and sustainability within a community.
