Posted: Thu, 2019-02-07 13:33

Vancity is now accepting applications of expressions of interest (EOI) from artists or artist teams who live or work in Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley and Squamish Valley, to design and integrate a site-specific art commission for the soon to be relocated North Road community branch 16. We’re seeking applications for artwork for a curved wall that reflect and interpret, in a celebratory way, the rich and diverse culture of the local community of the North Road branch.

Content / themes must align to Vancity’s vision and values, and can be social, economic, historical, environmental or a combination. Preference will be given to submissions that aim to incorporate up-cycled, recycled, sustainably sourced, salvaged, found and/or other natural media.

Media Release | World Premiere of IS THERE A PICTURE

Posted: Fri, 2019-01-04 12:37

"I had the feeling that photography could live on a wall in a space with people standing in front of it physically the way that painting has for centuries..." – Jeff Wall

The "Vancouver School" of photo-conceptualists emerged in the 1960s and 70s and went on to change the very idea of what photography could be. There was no mission, no mandate, but an explosion of creative energy which for some reason came into sharp focus in a small, rapidly evolving city on the west coast.

Stimson previously curated the UnSettled visual art exhibition for our 2017 Two-Spirit and Indigequeer curated Queer Arts Festival. Naked Napi is Stimson’s first solo exhibition since winning the Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts earlier this year.

In this site-specific installation of sculpture, drawings, and paintings, Stimson reimagines the traditional Siksika (Blackfoot) tales of Napi in the present and challenges the colonial erasure of Indigenous bodies, power, and sexual histories.

Coquitlam Public Library is hosting the Canada 150 Mosaic community art project on October 20 and 21 at the City Centre Branch Library at 1169 Pinetree Way.

You, your family and friends are invited to participate by painting a 4” x 4” tile. The project’s artists will provide a short training session at the beginning of the hour, and guidance as needed.

The approximately 500 painted tiles will become part of a 12' x 8' large mosaic mural that celebrates the past and present of industry in Coquitlam. It will also be part of a gigantic virtual mural composed of 150 murals from 150 communities throughout Canada.

Call For Submissions | Exhibition Collaboratively Curated by AHIS 401 Curatorial Projects Seminar

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Establishments, institutions, public areas, domestic spaces, even ephemeral situations carry with them protocols with which we are asked to comply as we encounter, enter, or pass through them. Our contemporary understanding of “protocol” is as “an official procedure or system of rules governing affairs or behaviours.” However, early definitions of the term—a provisional draft, a working manuscript—imply its opposite.

We invite submissions of recent or proposed work from students active in any and all media, to be considered for inclusion in an exhibition project investigating this expanded space of protocol, collaboratively curated by the students of Emily Carr University’s AHIS 401 Topics in Curatorial Projects.
