News for Alumni

Vancouver-based Storypanda and Jostle have recently been chosen as two of the top 15 technology startups in Canada by a distinguished panel of Silicon Valley investors and influencers. The companies were selected to present at this year’s GROW Conference.

Although the two companies develop wildly different products – one sells enterprise collaboration software, the other is targeted at kids and their parents – they do have an interesting commonality: both product design teams are spearheaded by grads of Emily Carr's inaugural year (2008) of the Masters of Applied Arts program!

Corrinne Wolcoski (03) is featured in a two-person exhibition, Fire and Water (with Paul C. Nickless) that focuses on the vibrancy and calm of our landscape. Wolcoski and Nickless present this perfect dichotomy with their wildly varying approaches and techniques to represent the earth’s landscape.

Outdoor recreation sites collide with European interiors in Val Nelson’s (88)  forthcoming solo exhibition, My Divided Attention. Using the notion of the travel destination as a metaphor for the anxieties, yearnings, and contradictions of contemporary life, her new paintings address the dissonance between a general unease for the future and an apparent optimism as evidenced by the continued global drive toward material excess.

221A Artist Run Centre presents Hook-ness, a collaborative exhibition featuring the work of seven Vancouver-based designers who explore the complexities of ‘hook’. Each designer questions the conventions and assumptions of hooks—offering an array of new findings, interpretations and narratives. 

The Emily Carr University of Art + Design Alumni Association Exhibition Committee is currently seeking submissions from Alumni Association members for our newly renovated gallery at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. The Mezzanine Gallery is located on the mezzanine level and 3^rd floor of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. The new gallery offers two exhibition spaces; 85 linear feet of exhibition wall space for 2-D work on the mezzanine and 4 exhibition plinths for 3-D work on the 3^rd floor.

Jen Gellis (09 MAA) designed a Sensory Wall Component for the Whistler Inclusive Playground, which officially opened Thursday, March 11^th, prior to the opening ceremonies for the Paralympic Games.

Baron Gallery presents Letters to Cuba , paintings and photographs by Greg Swales (03).  Swales is a Canadian Artist of Cuban/British background. As far back as he can remember Swales knew he was destined for a career in the arts. He studied Photography at the Emily Carr Institute, now Emily Carr University of Art + Design. In his last year before completing his BFA, he began to rediscover his passion for painting and upon graduating moved to Cuba to study painting at the Superior Institute of Art in Havana.

Myungsook Lee (08) has recently lauched a new Canadian multicultural awareness photo magazine. DIVERSE has a strong focus on art, culture and heritage with each quarterly issue offering stories on artists and art reviews, cultural complexity and identity. Various ethnic groups are highlighted to show their distinct cultural heritages, both historical and social.

Vancouver-based clothing and textile designer, Katherine Soucie (09), recently launched her new collection, Vanitas.
