Ian Wallace: The Economy of the Image

Former professor Ian Wallace (1972-1998) unveils a solo exhibition at the Power Plant, Toronto - Ian Wallace: The Economy of the Image.  Artist, teacher and critic, Wallace has had significant influence on the development of contemporary art in Vancouver.

In 2007, Emily Carr presented Wallace with an Honorary Doctorate, in recognition of his many contributions to the world of art. And, in 2008, The Ian Wallace - Excellence in Teaching Award was established by Emily Carr benefactor, Bob Rennie. The award is presented annually to an Emily Carr faculty member.

Design for Social Change

Have you ever had an idea for making your community or organization better? In this studio/seminar course, students will be challenged to use design thinking and process to consider complex social and economic problems. Through discussions, collaborations, research and prototyping of ideas, students will learn about design as it relates to the social, cultural, environmental and economic systems we live in. The outcome of this course will be a real project that could be presented to a potential client or community leader for implementation. Ideal for people who want to learn how to apply creative process to complex topics in order to realize tangible outcomes.

2010 MAA graduate Darinka Aguirre was accepted to present her thesis, Design for Repurposing, at the Learning Network on Sustainability (LenS) Conference in Bangalore, India.

Pratt Academic Leadership Summit on Sustainability

Emily Carr University of Art + Design, along with 35 independent colleges, institutes and universities of art and design from across North America, will take part in the Pratt Academic Leadership Summit on Sustainability (PALSS) from September 29 through October 2, 2010 at Pratt Institute’s Manhattan Campus and the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.

The event, which aims to help institutions work collectively to build a strategic plan for integrating environmental sustainability education into art and design programs, will focus on three themes — the future of design education, curricula for a new generation of artists and designers, and strategies for organizational change.

Associate Professor, Louise St. Pierre will represent Emily Carr.

Stereoscopic 3D Centre of Excellence

The new Stereoscopic 3D (S3D) Centre of Excellence, officially announced in May 2010, is built around state-of-the-art cinematic capture and display technology.  Together with our partners which include Kerner Optical, Sony, Panavision, Cine-Tal, Fujinon, Codex, Everz, and Silicon Imaging, it will offer opportunities for both content producers and hardware/software manufacturers to get involved.
