Nicole Dextras: Artist in Residence Vandusen Botanical Garden

Nicole Dextras, current Continuing Studies Instructor, is the artist in residence at VanDusen Botanical Garden this summer. She will create outdoor ephemeral installations in the garden until mid-September.

GREEN WORDS, growing the language questions our notion of Culture as it relates to nature.Nicole examines the era of Versailles as the epitome of the garden as a symbol of high culture.

Diaz Contemporary in Toronto is currently presenting the works of Monique Mouton (06), Sally Spath and Mina Totino in an exhibition curated by Elizabeth Macintosh, Assistant Professor, in an exhibit entitled Working Title.

Neil Campbell, Sessional Instructor, is exhibiting at Marianne Boesky Gallery, NY, in Crop Circles, a group show curated by Clarissa Dalrymple. The exhibition also includes Marc Bijl, Jeroen Jongeleen, KRIWET, Jochen Lempert, Marlo Pascual and Jeffrey Wells. Campbell received mention in Ken Johnson's summer review in the New York Times. Johnson writes, "In a corner of the main gallery two enormous black circles painted on each wall by Neil Campbell give the momentarily thrilling illusion of openings into infinite space".

A feature article by David Jager, "Painting in Tongues: The brush-stroke language of Ben Reeves" appears in this summer's edition of Canadian Art Magazine. Reeves, a faculty member at ECU (Painting), also has his work showcased on the cover.

Holly Ward: IDYLL exhibition (Morris and Helen Belkin Gallery)

On the 40th anniversary of May 1968, the Belkin Art Gallery presents three exhibitions that address aspects of that revolutionary decade.

Holly Ward's, sessional faculty, 2005 work called Radical Rupture, is an installation that incorporates a recording of a 1967 speech given by Herbert Marcuse in London, "On Liberation from the Affluent Society" as the sound track for a projection of an erratic starry night.

Henry Tsang: Napa North

Napa North is a solo photography and video exhibition by Henry Tsang, assistant professor, accompanied by wine tastings, workshops, demonstrations and screenings. Over the past year, Vancouver-based artist Henry Tsang worked with local stakeholders in the wine, land development and cultural communities to develop language around their hopes and concerns as the Okanagan continues to grow at its current frenetic pace.

Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan and City Council have announced that ECI Associate Professor, Liz Magor, has been named as one of the honourees for the annual Mayor’s Arts Awards to be held June 23, 2008 at the Vancouver Playhouse.

Each year, a jury of peers convened by the Alliance of Arts and Culture nominates Vancouver artists or community members who have made significant contributions to the creative life of our city. Liz will be honoured in the Studio Arts (Visual Arts) category.
