*glisten) HIVE  is a project that aggregates, visualizes and sonifies Twitter communications about animals. The project offers textual representations of empathy, as a form of ecological relating. The Tweets selected for the project are mapped into the installation as animated text mimicking social-insect swarming patterns. The animations are created using Max/MSP software that allow for regular Tweet updates to the swarms' non-repeating organically moving patterns. Visitors can contribute Tweets to the swarm via mobile devices. The soundscape is produced using granular synthesis and generative techniques to create a soundscape of many voices.

EPIC_Tom

EPIC_Tom expands on new media performance by incorporating canine voice and creativity. For this interspecies project, the artists ask: what is a dog experiencing the moment just before catching a ball? Could it be proto-euphoric—eager, expectant, desirous? The performance explores visualizing and sonifying, in a live setting, canine collaborator Tom’s state of mind.

Chatter and Listening: For three or more bird boxes

description

Chatter and Listening: For three bird boxes, is an interactive installation using a distributed network of sounding robots. The behaviour of the robots emerges from a multi-agent system modelled after a bird behaviours. The installation comprises of three bird boxes with electronics and audio, located in a small grove of trees. These objects act as single entities; they can create decisions, observe their environment and operate alone. They also act in the narrative of a colony where each agent is guided in behaviour by the state of the colony and its surrounding environment.

Impress: a machine learning approach to audio affect prediction

images

description

Soundscape Composition is the artistic processing and combination of sound recordings used to trigger associations and memories in a listener. Impress was designed to predict affect of soundscapes, at interactive speeds.
Impress was motivated by the lack of any measurement tool to aid soundscape performers in eliciting intended responses from listeners.

Impress facilitates the acquisition of audio training data from real-world environments. Moreover, it was designed to provide performers autonomous indication of affect during live performance along two axes of pleasantness and eventfulness.

Chatter and Listening

video

description

Chatter and Listening is designed upon multiple re-locatable art objects with sonic attributes. These objects act as single entities: they can create decisions, observe their environment and operate alone. They also act in the manner of a colony where each entity is influenced by the state of the colony and its surrounding environment.
The colony behaviour exhibited in Chatter and Listening is modelled from the Australian magpie bird. All together, Chatter and Listening is a multi-node spatial sound sculpture that operates wirelessly over a range of distances to create a distributed sonic art object.

site, sound, touch: Composing You, an interactive outdoor project, engages community park goers in a multitude of ways. An experiential sonic walk encompasses ephemeral moments of past, present and future in Beacon Hill Park, using personal mobile phones and GPS to locate plants hanging from designated trees. Sound and light will activate the moment plants are touched. A personal musical composition will be formed depending on individual navigation routes.

Imaging Vancouver

images

description

Imaging Vancouver is a complimentary project to the performance work Mesoshpere.  Imaging Vancouver is a further investigation to the intersections between body, environment, and technology. Specifically, to explore relationships between individual identity and place through technology mediated representations.

Participants are invited to interact with the system.  A persons body in space is mapped using the Kinect 3D capture camera.  The depth map data is combined with pixel information from video footage of street level activity in Vancouver.  The resulting artifact, somewhat reminisce of the brain scans reading peoples dreams, is the viewers body seen as individual of components of the video, like a real-time stencil.
