The Gaze of History

description

The Gaze of History exhibition presented a series of prints and drawings from the Burnaby Art Gallery's collection that considered the gaze and directed looking. The powdered graphite faces I drew directly on the walls of the gallery interacted and responded to these framed works and represented the real and imagined former residents of this building.

“Fairacres,” as it was first known, was built as a retirement estate by Vancouver realtor Henry Ceperley and his wife Grace in 1910. Prior to its conversion to the gallery in 1967, the mansion housed a succession of wealthy families, beginning with the Ceperleys (1910-1939), a community of Benedictine monks (1939-1954), a controversial religious cult (1954-1965) and a university fraternity (1965-1966).

Canadian Coat of Arms

images

description

The design concept of my version of the Canadian Coat of Arms is inspired by contemporary and traditional symbols and iconography of Canada. Maple leaves are a distinct national symbol for Canada. The chain of maple leaves symbolizes the abundance forests in the Canadian land and as world leader in the sustainable forest management. The toque was a rally symbol during 1837-1839 Patriotes Rebellion. Now, it’s a symbol of freedom and the pursuit of liberty. It represents the Canadian culture in a functional and fashionable way. The Orca or Killer Whale represents the Aboriginals in Canada. It symbolizes family, romance, longevity, harmony, travel, community and protection. It also represents the marine as oppose to the moose is used for land.

Canadian Coat of Arms

description

The design concept of my Canadian Crest is a contemporary digital illustration inspired by traditional iconography, symbols and crests. The new Coat of Arms uses colours, heraldry forms and symbols to represent Canadian Design. I have included a sceptre to symbolize justice and Canada’s imperial influences. The wreath is abstracted as feathers directly above mantling. The helm and mantle was originally designed to protect the head and shoulders of the wearer so I included a RCMP hat and scarf with Canada’s official maple leaf tartan.

The Clark Family

For my fall semester senior project, I chose to create a way of organizing and sharing family histories that is non-traditional, inventive and user-friendly. I used my own family's history for the project, but another family could easily be swapped in.
