Up + Haute

description

Up + Haute is a clothing line dedicated to reclaiming clothing as precious items. Each Garment in the line is created uniquely for an individual out of sustainable materials and co-creative design methods to construct apparel that we value. The line is the culmination of Emily Grier's Bachelor of Industrial Design and was developed in response to the epidemic of fast fashion we face both socially and environmentally today.

Smarterwear Heated Jacket

images

description

The Smarterwear Heated Jacket is a personal heating device with a lightweight lining. The lining itself uses an Arduino lilypad to detect the user's body temperature, heating when needed and automatically shutting down when the user is warm. This makes the Smarterwear Heated Jacket ideal for outdoor exercise in cold weather, individuals with poor circulation, when running errands in downtown Vancouver to eliminate the need for constantly removing your jacket when the environment's or user's body heat fluctuates.

Furnace

Furnace engages with the evolving narrative we as consumers share with production.  New technologies have given rise to new ways of thinking about distribution, consumption, and mass production.  Classically difficult production methods have historically been introduced to the individual by means of clever design and small machines.  The Furnace design project tries to bring a difficult production method, metal casting, to the individual in a home environment by simplifying and mitigating the tasks involved through the use of a new machine.  Focusing on small-scale production is also inspired partially by current social pressures and a perceived reinvestment in handcraft as well as consumer desire to know the his

The high value we associate with our time is what makes it difficult to explore “wasting” it—also why we split our attention between so many influences, to avoid at all costs any wasted time. It then becomes necessary to actively appreciate the value and importance of rituals, behaviors that strengthen over time, and develop personal formulas for mental discipline—what ratio of time spent “consuming” versus time spent contemplating promotes optimal functioning and richness of thought.

Implicit

description

Like the states of water (gas, liquid, solid) information manifests in different ways (materially, digitally, cognitively).

Implicit is a vehicle to explore these states and engage in conversation about authorship (especially when the author is not human—in this case environmental forces), meaning (when it is implied and not overt), as well as connection (how a physical connection fosters and grows an emotional link).

description

rila was a collaborative project between ECUAD students Lisa Boulton and Karen Byskov. Rice paper was used with water to bind two pieces of fabric. After adding the wet rice paper the fabric pieces can be molded into a desired shape and left to dry. They can later be re-wet and molded into a new shape. One of the key objectives for the project was to connect fashion and customization with sustainable design strategies. The project was included in the Craft of Use event in London March 2014.
