System design for extend the value of historical reclaimed material.

Moving Vancouver towards a zero waste future is going to require changing behaviours and changing the system. In order to reach the target of reducing landfill waste 50% by 2020,changing behaviour will be mandatory - to do deconstruction rather than demolition. Which leads to another question, what can we do other than sending salvage material to recycle center? Each house has its own story, to build up the rich history for Vancouver and continue the store. We need to transform waste into something valuable.

Profile Chair

video

description

The PROFILE CHAIR was our answer to everything we didn’t like about folding chairs. Folding chairs are shy, coming out only when extra seating is needed. They are ashamed of their cluttered leg regions, complicated actions, and cheap materials.

The PROFILE CHAIR folds on a single axis. This cuts down on intersecting lines and gives the chair a minimal profile that takes up less visual space when open, and less physical space when closed.

PROFILE CHAIR is a chair that you can use everyday. The powder coated steel and solid larch make it equally at home indoors and outdoors.

frame : powder coated steel

legs, feet, seat pan, and back rest : waxed larch

Flight Lamp

description

Flight Lamp is a substantial desk lamp with fine details and materials, that can be shipped deconstructed in an 11"x17" envelope. The shade is laser cut from Spruce aircraft plywood, the dowels are birch hardwood, and the legs are either solid polished Brass or Copper. The materials and finish have been meticulously chosen to match their possible patinas. When the brass oxidizes, it darkens and will compliment its all black counterparts. As for the copper legs, they will turn a minty green, complimenting the mint stained shade. Like most objects that are meant to transcend generations, components of the flight lamp can be removed easily and cared for. The legs are easily removed for polishing if one wants to retain the mirrored finish of the brass or copper.

Junk Lamp

description

The Junk Lamp is an exercise in sustainability martyrism. There are many cases of people creating objects out of discarded trash. In the final form, these objects tend to resemble just that, objects made of trash. The Junk Lamp attempts to create an attractive functional lamp from trash without showcasing its genealogy. Sustainability will never become common place if it is continually used as a selling point for a product. This is only a detourant to the people that need to accept it the most, the non believers.

Heavystock shelving

description

Heavystock is a simple, clean, and sturdy low shelving system. Heavystock consists of simple soft form maple legs and steel shelves. The heavy stock shelving has a light paper- like profile but is quite the opposite. When constructed the shelving is weighty and rigid.  The radius created from the bending of the steel panels is mirrored by the radiuses on the legs where the steel shelves meet the Maple legs, making the connections very subtle and almost illusional. Heavy stock keeps its light and simple form and also remains rigid without cross braces through the arrangement of the legs. By connecting the legs on the bias, there is no need for braces since any twisting is counter acted by the adjacent legs.
