In the fall of 1927, artist and author Emily Carr boarded a train in Vancouver, traveling eastward to Ottawa to see her first paintings on exhibit in the National Gallery. This is where her art was introduced to all of Canada and where she met the Group of Seven painters, and was inspired to continue painting the wild Canadian landscape in her own interpretation and style.

On October 1, 2017, this historic trip will be commemorated on its 90th Anniversary, with a live actor performing as Emily Carr, from Vancouver to Ottawa. The purpose of this trip is to celebrate this historic Canadian icon, share her art and written works with new generations of Canadians.

On Friday, April 24, 2015, Emily Carr University special guests broke ground at a ceremony to marking the launch of construction for our new campus.

As part of the celebration, four Emily Carr undergraduate communication design students created and designed the seven shovels to mark this historic event.  

The seven shovels were created to represent seven distinct areas within Emily Carr’s community.

1. Foundation Year – triangle motif symbolizes a pyramid, upward movement and focus, the journey students travel while pursuing their undergraduate degrees

2. Faculty of Culture + Community – the circles represent the group, and the connection we all share with one another, which forms the fabric of culture

On August 31, 2014, Krystal Kiran (House of Kiran) hosted a party to celebrate her 30^th birthday.  But this was a party with a purpose: it was a fundraiser to support the Maple Batalia Memorial Scholarship for the Arts.

In an ever growing landscape of pop-ups and shops, A Pop Up Affair was formed as a collective to try and shift the way new designers could collaborate and expose their work in Vancouver. A Pop-Up Affair is a collective of a designers and makers, whose nine founding members are all recent graduates from Emily Carr University.

They saw an opportunity in the design community to create engaging spaces that promote the work of young designers in Vancouver. Together they build spaces that promote and expose new design and creative conversations.

Currently the Vancouver Pop-up Affair collective are preparing for their inaugural event, Peep Show, which will be taking place from September 19 to 28, 2014, at MakerLabs.

Bob Rennie, CEO of Rennie Marketing Systems, has a long history of supporting Emily Carr students and alumni. For nearly two decades, Bob has contributed to scholarships, awards, and research programs that benefit individual students and facilitate academic excellence.

Bob has also been very generous with his time. In 2010, he was appointed as a Director-at-Large for the Emily Carr Board of Governors, the body that manages, administers and directs the affairs of the University. Since then, he has advocated tirelessly for Emily Carr, even while he contributes his time to various other arts and culture organizations in Vancouver.

Emily Carr University gratefully announces a milestone donation of $400,000 from the RBC Emerging Artists Project. This gift brings RBC's total contribution to Emily Carr University's THE BIG IDEA capital campaign to $500,000. This is the largest investment that a financial institution has ever made in support of the University.

The RBC Emerging Artists Project supports programs that bridge the gap from academic excellence to professional careers in all art forms. Emily Carr University will use this generous gift to establish a creative grant program for students and will recognize this commitment by naming the media gallery space at Emily Carr’s new campus at Great Northern Way.

$7M Reliance Properties gift launches THE BIG IDEA @emilycarru

Real estate developer Reliance Properties announces a $7-million donation which publicly launches Emily Carr University’s capital campaign, THE BIG IDEA. This contribution sets a new standard for philanthropy – it is the largest gift ever given to an arts-only University in Canada.

Congratulations to third year student Christian Huizenga whose piece, Bench Way, was selected as the winner of the First Capital Realty Sculpture Contest. Christian will work with representatives from First Capital Realty, Emily Carr, engineers and fabricators over the summer to complete the project (see maquette) which will be located at Harbour Front Centre in North Vancouver.

The jury wishes to thank all of the students for their proposals, in particular the short-listed students whose maquettes reflected both their creativity and earnestness. 

In 2014, the Peggy Anderson "Continue Painting" Opportunity was established in Peggy's memory by her family to celebrate her life, her love of art, and her desire to spend more time painting. Current Continuing Studies Painting Students are invited to enter to win a free painting course through Continuing Studies.
