BIO OF ALAN BOYKIW

Alan Boykiw (MA, Carleton University, 1993/BID Carleton University, 1982)
Associate Professor, Head of Design
Alan Boykiws experience spans both industry and academic fields. His main focus has been in the telecommunications area as an Industrial Designer and Product Design Manager. In his 15 years with Nortel Networks he was involved in a wide range of products from the worlds first calling line ID phone to the definition of next generation communication devices and user interface architecture. He has several industrial design patents and registrations to his credit.
Most recently Alan was the Lead Design Researcher at the New Media Innovation Centre in Vancouver and the Associate Director of the Information Environments Program at the University of Queensland in Australia. He was also a member of faculty in the School of Industrial Design at Carleton University and an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary.
Current research interests include: investigating how physical interaction methods will evolve to enable people to feel, experience, and associate with sensory rich new media environments and the discovery and invention of new creative pursuits in immersive digital environments. Teaching responsibilities include Interaction Design, Design Drawing and Grad Project supervision.
Kyla Mallett is currently completing the masters program in the Fine Arts Department at the University of British Columbia, after completing her BFA at Emily Carr in 2000. Since that time her practice has explored issues of teen youth identity through interview/statistic research, installation, photographic and video works. Recent work includes a series of photo works that document collected female high school student notes, and a video work about girl bullying. These works, along with other current projects, zero in on the importance of language and communication in the social lives of adolescent girls.
She has received critical attention for exhibitions both nationally and internationally over the past five years, having exhibited at such institutions as the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and Catriona Jeffries Gallery, with a recent feature in Canadian Art Magazine on her work.
BIO OF JONATHAN NODRICK

Jonathan Nodrick is a designer, media artist and promoter of independent
music and culture. In 1997 he started and ran Heaven nightclub in Calgary,
AB and moved to Vancouver after being accepted into the ECI Communication
Design program. In his graduate year Jonathan participated in the Leaders of
Tomorrow program and a mentorship with Don Mattrick (President, Electronic
Arts / Worldwide Studios). His professional experience includes the role of
designer for a New Media Innovation Centre (NewMIC) project, researching the
negotiation of social capital in on-line environments. Currently, he is the
founder and creative director for musicpeople and hosts regular events that
connect and showcase independent cultural producers and collectors.
Suzi Webster is a recent fine arts graduate of Emily Carr Institute and holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Her multimedia installation work explores tensions, potentials and collisions between the real and the virtual, the viewer and the viewed. Her interest in interactivity and new media was stimulated by her internship at the New Media Innovation Centre in Vancouver. Suzi plans to begin an MFA in 2005, where she will continue to question and explore the implications of new media within a critical framework.
