Architecture 1867-Present

Largest Hotel in the Commonwealth
The Royal York opened in 1929 and its grand appearance made it an
immediate Toronto landmark.
Toronto's ties to the British
Commonwealth were quite strong at the time, which helps to explain why
this hotel is so popular with royalty.
The original hotel on this
spot was called the Queen's Hotel and was loved by the citizens of
Toronto. Then Canadian Pacific Railway announced plans to build the
largest hotel in the British Commonwealth, across the street from Union
train station.
This Lecture includes references to architecture
from the time of Confederation to recent award winning architectural
designs.
