WEEKS 1, 2 + 3
Unit I:  Color- Natural Resources

Session 1: Color in nature, mimicry, camouflage, bio- mimicry & design, sustainable design
Next week: bring samples of natural palette in the next class, generate few Project 01 proposals (rough concepts) and bring them into next class

Session 2: Bio-design, pigments & dyes, light and color phenomena applied to design
In class work: collage made of natural resources (collage, mixed media), working on the project

Next week: work on the project

Project 01 description: COLOR RESOURCES

WEEKS 4, 5 + 6
Unit II: Color- Information graphics (directions & instructions)

Session 4: Color-coding, exploration of information hierarchies within a grid structure
Discuss:  Introduction to semiotic forms (icons, symbols and indexes)
Research assignment (2 students)
Next week:  bring examples of information hierarchies for review in next class

Session 5: Visual instructions review and continue working on hierarchy experiments Signs and Symbols: Introduction to semiotic forms (icons, symbols and indexes); pictograms and signs: Abstraction, Reduction, and Simplification techniques

Next week:  Continue working on the project

Session 6: Project 02 presentations: color signage & instructions in the space


WEEKS 7, 8 + 9
Unit III: Color- Branding (team-based work)
Session 7: Color identification, corporate identity based on color (examples and discussion); branding media and spaces
Research assignment (2 students)
Next week: please bring preliminary sketches, thumbnails and brainstorm concepts to the class; also remember to bring scissors, glue, color papers, prints/images, cardboard, etc, to work on your 3D model/mockup

Session 8: Branding techniques & strategies, identification package (logo, visual identity, communication graphics, promotion, public presence)

Session 9: Project 03 presentations: 2D corporate ID package, 3D architectural model

WEEK 10, 11 + 12    
Unit IV: Color- Marketing and advertising
Session 10: Psychology of Color, advertising campaign techniques (media and resources)
Review and discussion of advertising media, in class brainstorm/concept for the project
Research assignment (3 students)

Session 11: color & culture (global audience), color & culture (local audience)
Discussion of local advertising examples, in class work on the project
Research assignment (3 students)

Session 12: Project 04 presentations*: advertising campaign


REDESIGN (special assignment)

This special assignment will be presented on dedicated sessions (2, 4,5,7,8,10 and 11). Students are asked to find an example of the color concept in the environment and redesign the origin. Students will present the new design using various methods and techniques, based on in-depth analysis of the current design and provide the comprehensive support to their proposal.

Questions
•    What works and what doesn’t work in the current design?
•    How does it compare to design of competitors?
•    Are there certain aspects of the design that draw a lot of feedback, either positive or negative?
•    What areas of the design could be improved?
•    What style should the new design feature?
•    Could a new design keep the same feel, or does it need to be stripped down and totally started over?
•    What color scheme would be more appropriate and why?

Project steps:
1.    Research: Choose a design (logo, advertising, website, banner, poster, ID, etc) and analyze the content, color palette, etc
2.    Brainstorm: Search for alternative proposals
3.    Sketch: Use the medium of your choice to present your final version of the new design
4.    Create: A redesign proposal using digital format
5.    Present: The redesign process and explain research details to the class
