 Project 02 - Colour Interpretation (20%)

(colour theory + wheel studies)

Diptych-collaboration between 2 students  - 3 weeks

Students will share resources & research and work together and create 2 paintings that are exhibited as one artwork. Students will study color theory by mixing key colours and analyzing paint application methods of their favorite painter. They will examine basic colour schemes and chromatic colour values (tone saturation and hue). At the same time, they will learn oil painting techniques and apply the knowledge to make a collaborative diptych consisting of two paintings, which combine methods & techniques of a (chosen) author & style.

Limited palette, colour schemes, colour terminology (hue, saturation, tone), colour wheel, Old Masters oil painting techniques, art style, paint application

• Each student will pick a favorite painter/colorist and study his/her colour scheme
• Extract the 5 colours from selected painting at  http://kuler.adobe.com/#
• Research & apply Master’s painting techniques & style

• Each student will make one painting as a part of the diptych
• Use Master’s colour scheme and limited palette
• Make a composition for a diptych in collaboration
• Decide on size & shape of the paintings
• Diptych will be presented as one (collaborative) piece

Paints: Acrylic and/or Oil paints

Support: panel or canvas (shape and size determined by students) or alternative surfaces

Ground priming, underpainting in colours, glazing & painting “alla prima”
