Through this new body of work, Barb Choit plays with different methods of archival documentation. Her materials reference “Colored Pencil Art,” an amateur art genre with a devoted online community. Choit draws a parallel to the amateur eBay photographer, whose often-sophisticated aesthetic discloses itself through unplanned compositional elements: juxtaposition, repetition, color combinations, hands, and feet.

This new archive of contemporary eBay imagery is structured linguistically—reflective of modern Internet search methods. All chosen images have the word “lot” or “lots” in their titles. The word references the “auction lot.” However, as most eBay items are no longer sold via auction, the term now broadly means “more than one object,” and is used by sellers to manipulate search results. These new drawings are presented as a “lot,” as a singular archive rather than a collection of individual works.
