READ Books would like to invite you to the launch of No Day Without its Line, a new publication by Calgary-based artist Lyndl Hall.

No Day Without its Line explores various historical or mythological occurrences where the act of drawing or mark-making appears. These narratives are contextualized alongside the practices of artists and writers such as Albrecht Dürer, Agnes Martin, Emma Kunz, and Charles Olson. Hall investigates the ontological and phenomenological reverberations of non-representational gestures and posits that rudimentary mark-making developed language and abstract thought.

The publication opens with an examination of the 4th Century BCE painter Apelles of Cos, from whom we get the dictum nulla dies sine linea: no day without its line. It goes on to look at lines, marks, circles, points, and grids found in such places as the omen compendiums of ancient Mesopotamia, divination systems of North Africa, witch and fairy circles of medieval Europe, the myths of Odysseus and Penelope, Ariadne and the Minotaur, Poseidon, Medusa, and Demeter, as well as the classical philosophers Pyrrho, Anaximander, Pytheas, and Eratosthenes.

No Day Without its Line considers how non-representational marks have structured and oriented perception and how this has been manifested through mythological stories, rituals, and magical acts in order to produce patterns, meaning, and order in the world.

Lyndl Hall is a visual artist who has had solo exhibitions at the Burrard Arts Foundation, Vancouver; the Burnaby Art Gallery; the Reach Gallery Museum, Abbotsford; CSA Space, Vancouver; as well as participating in group exhibitions at the Sanatorium Project Space, Istanbul; the Western Front, Vancouver; and Access Artist Run Centre, Vancouver. Her work has been published in The Capilano Review, West Coast Line, and by Publication Studio Vancouver. Hall has a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal and a MAA in Visual Arts from Emily Carr University, Vancouver. She lives and works in Calgary.
