The first Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Film Festival launches on the weekend of October 19-20, 2019 in the Reliance Theatre at Emily Carr University. Free screenings, live music and regional delicacies will be on offer to celebrate the work of MENA-identifying filmmakers and storytellers both locally and in the wider diaspora.
Among the work presented is the Vancouver debut of Sundance Grand Jury nominated documentary Gaza and internationally-acclaimed sophomore feature by Abbas Fahdel, Yara.
Guests are welcomed to share food, music and film put on free of charge with the generous help of our community sponsors. The Reliance Theatre atrium is the locus of the gathering where audiences will meet over Palestinian fare by local caterer Aleph, leading into our selection of films on Saturday and Sunday evenings: a selection boasting both local work and some of the year’s most lauded films coming from the Middle East.
