In conjunction with the Textile Society of America conference being held this September in Vancouver, grunt gallery presents Woven Work From Near Here, a group show curated by Assistant Professor Emily Hermant and T’ai Smith. Inspired by traditional practices—including Indigenous methods for weaving blankets and baskets alongside structures and patterns that come from elsewhere—the exhibition presents recent experiments by eight artists who live and work near here. Using materials and methods that stretch what it means to be a woven textile, the works in the show signal the potential of this practice to realign political protocols and alter cultural values.

Featuring work by: Debra Sparrow or θəliχʷəlʷət, Gabrielle L'Hirondelle Hill, Hank Bull, Jovencio de la Paz, Kerri Reid, Matt Browning, Melvin Williams, and sessional faculty member Merritt Johnson.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication featuring an essay by the exhibition curators.
