Bio
Alan began his career in radio as part of the award-winning team behind the five-part national CBC Radio documentary series A Matter of Survival, hosted by Dr. David Suzuki. He is also an accomplished filmmaker, having produced and directed multiple documentary projects, and has taught documentary film and digital media at both public and private institutions. Alan holds a Master of Applied Arts from ECU, where his research examined the impact of 3D technology on documentary storytelling. He now serves as Industry Liaison for Research at ECU, supporting industry partnerships, managing applied research and service projects, and facilitating student internships that connect creative talent with real-world innovation challenges.
Research Interests
Alan is a practicing filmmaker whose work spans cultural, personal and science-driven documentary. His films include the award-winning Glowing in the Dark, which explores the history and cultural impact of neon light across Vancouver, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and the semi-autobiographical Who the Jew Are You?, which premiered on Rogers OMNI and screened at festivals throughout North America. He is also the director and writer of Finding Freedom, a documentary that captures the harsh realities faced by those seeking international asylum in pursuit of a new life. Most recently, he wrote and directed the feature-length science documentary Bending Light, chronicling an international team of astronomers on an expedition to test Einstein’s theory of general relativity.
