Bio
Marty McLennan is a woodworker and designer whose craft bridges artistry and utility. With a PhD in the Philosophy of Technology, his work investigates how tools, materials and human intention intersect in the making of useful beauty. In his studio, Marty shapes wood into objects that invite both reflection and use — chairs that encourage presence, tables that foster gathering, and forms that celebrate the intelligence of the hand. His writing and teaching explore craftsmanship as a dialogue between maker and material, reminding us that true design unites function, ethics and aesthetic grace in everyday life.
Research Interests
Marty's work emphasizes “functional aesthetics” — creating furniture and everyday items that delight the senses while serving a clear purpose. Drawing on traditional joinery and modern minimalism, Marty’s pieces celebrate understated elegance and ergonomic precision.
