DESN 501: Advanced Studio II

This studio course expands on the work started in Advanced Studio I. This course emphasizes critical inquiry and studio practice as primary means for learning. The course blends rigorous individual and group critiques and provides a balanced integration of theory, practice, and production, with access to advanced technologies.

The nature and practice of design will be investigated in order to understand the underlying principles that make the design of objects and communication possible and will synthesize theory and practice as necessary partners in design. The course actively promotes critical reflection, sustainability, the creative environment, and the intellectual context for experimentation and will take into account the creation, analysis and understanding of the interaction of culture and technology within social and cultural context. The design of interface will be addressed as it serves the process of communication, accessibility, function and integration across the disciplines of design as a whole.

Collaboration with other graduate students from any stream of the program is encouraged as are investigation of hybrid and innovative forms of production.
